When Healing Comes All at Once

By

Lately, I’ve realised I was doing too much.

Not in the obvious, frantic way — but in the quiet, determined way that looks like progress. Reading. Writing. Reflecting. Naming patterns. Making sense of myself. Trying to heal with intention and care.

Healing, I’ve learned, isn’t linear.
And sometimes, even when you’re doing it “right,” it catches up with you anyway.

This week, it arrived all at once.

I think what finally surfaced was grief.

Grief for the little girl who was left unhelped — not because she wasn’t worthy, but because no one saw what she needed. Grief for how long I tried to translate myself into something more acceptable, more manageable, more understood.

Grief for friendships that didn’t survive — not because anyone was cruel, but because we didn’t click in the way I needed. Grief for the friendships I long for now: deep, reciprocal, steady — and the quiet knowing that they are rare, not because I’m asking too much, but because they require a certain way of being.

There is grief in realising that there isn’t anything left for me to fix.

No final version of myself waiting on the other side of enough effort. No point where I become easier, simpler, or less intense in a way that suddenly makes life fall into place.

This is my life.

Not the one I rehearsed for.
Not the one I tried so hard to earn.
But the one that is here — asking to be lived honestly.

That realisation is both heavy and oddly freeing.

It means I can stop chasing a version of myself that was never real. It means I can begin building a life that fits who I am now — with softer expectations, slower rhythms, and more room for rest.

Some days that feels like peace.
Some days it feels like loss.

Both are allowed.

If there is anything I’m learning, it’s this: healing isn’t about arriving. It’s about listening. And right now, my body and my heart are asking me to pause — not because I’ve failed, but because I’ve been brave enough to feel.

And that, too, is part of the work.                                                —Frost ❄️

Author’s note:
This was written during a moment when everything caught up with me at once. Healing had been happening quietly, and then suddenly it felt loud. Grief surfaced — not just for what was lost, but for what never had space to exist. There is nothing here to solve, only something to sit beside. If any part of this feels familiar, you’re welcome here.
