After
is where the truth lives.
Not in the intensity.
Not in the moment
where breath shortens
and the world narrows
to pulse and pressure.
After.
When the room grows quiet again
and my nervous system
doesn’t yet know
which century it is in.
There is always
a flicker first.
A small, disorienting echo
in the body.
Old memory
brushing briefly
against new safety.
Fifteen years
is sometimes
only a breath
to a nervous system
that learned early
to stay on guard.
My body remembers
before my mind does.
The way muscles hold.
The way adrenaline
lingers too long.
The way emotion
arrives sideways
and soft
and sudden.
But now—
now there are hands
that do not disappear
when the moment ends.
Now there is warmth
that stays.
I feel it
in the quiet ways first.
The steady presence beside me.
The familiar weight of the room.
The careful, wordless check-in
that asks
without pressure:
Where are you now?
This is where the repair happens.
Not in grand gestures.
In softness.
In the slow return
of breath to its natural rhythm.
In my shoulders
remembering
they are allowed
to drop.
In my body learning
again and again
that intensity
does not have to end
in abandonment.
Sometimes
it ends
in being held.
I am still learning
this language.
Still teaching my nervous system
that past and present
are no longer
the same room.
Some days
the landing is immediate.
Some days
it takes longer
for my body
to believe
what my life
now proves.
But each time
I come back
a little faster.
Each time
the trembling
settles
a little sooner.
Each time
my nervous system
writes a new memory
over the old map.
Not erased.
But gently
updated.
Until one day —
and I can already feel it coming —
the after
will feel
just as safe
as the moment
I let go.
